Abstract: A new species of flower fly (Diptera: Syrphidae) is described, Paragus
caligneus sp. nov. A full description with images is given, as well as a
species key for the subgenus Afroparagus Vujić & Radenković, 2008 and a
modification of the identification key for Paragus subgenera. Molecular
sequences from mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) and nuclear ribosomal
28S rRNA genes were analyzed to evaluate the monophyly of Afroparagus. All four
Paragus subgenera were recovered as monophyletic, although support values for
Afroparagus were very low.
